What To Do & Not To Do At Demonstrations

Attending your Saturday "Mega Rally" will my third. I have feed back for you, as the prior events where badly in needed of direction, organization and development of themes that resonate with the media.

* Stop chanting "marg bar....". A good reason for sympathy behind the movement in
Iran is that it began non-violent. In the US, that is the base for your strength. Don't ruin it by wishing down or death to anyone. The counter is of course, long live freedom, long live liberty, etc.

* Don't chant things that make no sense "natarsim, natarsim, ....ma hameh ba ham hastim". We are in the
US. There is nothing to be afraid of here. I understand the sympathy, but you want chants that catch the ear of TV news. There are plenty of good chants you can find by googling, and I am sure you can manage good ones yourself.

* Stop fighting for taking the microphone and leading chants. The last one I attended For Neda last Thursday look very JV/amateur.

* SET AN AGENDA. This is vital. At
5:30-5:45, so and so speaks, 5:45-6:00 chants (have the chants written).......

* Invite not just the media, but all anti-war and free/democracy groups you can.
Berkeley and the Mission are full of the them. You have to call all the non-profits. AND GIVE THEM A ROLE in the event.

* Dumb it down for the
5 o'clock news watcher.

If you get 10,000 Iranians to attend this Saturday is failure compared to getting 5,000 Americans. Outside of
Iran, this is a fight Iranians cannot fight alone. Focus on tactics that make the cause of interest to Americans.

Ideas to interject and consider

* CONFLICT OIL. We have to label
Iran's oil sold to the world as "CONFLICT OIL". Because oil, like diamonds can, if an interest, be traced to its source, we want democratic countries to stop buying Iranian oil.

*Pressure
Japan and S. Korea. They are after China, the biggest trading partners, and buyers of oil. They are quiet.

* Pressure EU, NAFTA and ASEAN to freeze all Iranian financial assets

* Pursue a strategy like boycott of APARTHEID in the 80s.
Iran is about to borrow $1.2-1.4B from "far east banks". Those banks should be boycotted by US firms.

* Pressure gov;ts not to recognize Ahmadinejad as
Iran's president.

* Pressure UN to pass a resolution at the Security Council, knowing well that
China and Russia will veto. At least they go on record for their position, and that is valuable.

I am sure you can come up with a whole bunch of other ways to increase pressure on
Iran, AND, to make the cause as "un-Iranian" as possible. When S. Africa was boycotted, it was boycotted by whites and blacks. That is how they strategy should be be layed for Iran's path to democracy.
